When the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series headed north to AT&T Park in San Francisco, California for the fourth round of the series everyone was hopeful the rain would subside. Fortunately the temperature was warmer than expected and Mother Nature provided enough of a break in the weather to get the racing in.
Saturday afternoon welcomed the riders with a wet track and an abbreviated practice schedule. The normal two sessions were cut down to one and that put a lot of pressure on the riders to lay down some fast times early on in the session. Both Antonio Balbi and Eric Sorby posted solid times inside the top 15 and secured their places on the start line in heats one and two, respectively.
With the rain still on hold, Antonio Balbi started off well in the first Supercross class heat race. Six laps into the race Balbi would fall victim to the sloppy conditions and go down. Two laps later he would cross the line 11th and be forced to ride the last chance qualifier later in the night.
Eric Sorby was a bit more fortunate in the second Supercross class heat race as he was able to get into a groove early and lock in an eighth place finish. Good enough for a spot on the line in the main event.
Unfortunately for Antonio the LCQ did not get off to a good start and he would have his work cut out for him. While he rode well, the deficit would prove to be too much and Balbi would cross the line 10th, outside of qualifying position.
When the riders lined up for the main event things got interesting as the rain began to fall. The normal 20 lap race was shortened to 15 and the riders knew a good start was a key to a top finish. Eric Sorby got a good start and found himself in sixth place right behind the series leader as the pack finished the first lap. With the half way mark coming out and the conditions continually getting worse, Sorby was riding well holding on to eighth place. As the laps wound down the tiring conditions began to get the better of Eric and he would eventually cross the line in 14th position.
Next weekend the series heads back to Angles Stadium for the fifth round of the series. This is the third and final stop in Anaheim before the series heads even further south to San Diego and with a quarter of the Supercross season already in the books things are starting to get interesting. So be sure to get out and show your support for the Hooters-Moto XXX race team one last time before the team hits the road. See you there!
